How to Value Your Club's Digital and Physical Assets

By the Sponsorcloud Team

Ask most club board members how they arrived at their sponsorship price and the honest answer is usually "we guessed" or "that's what the club down the road charges." Without a framework, clubs routinely leave money on the table with their most valuable assets and overprice the ones nobody wants.

What actually counts as a sponsorable asset

Sponsorship inventory falls into three buckets: physical (jersey space, pitch-side boards, stadium signage, match programs), digital (social media reach and engagement, email newsletter subscribers, website traffic), and experiential (match-day activation space, hospitality access, player or athlete appearances). Most clubs only ever sell the first bucket, which is usually the least differentiated — every club has a jersey. Digital and experiential assets are often where the real, defensible value sits, and where almost no local competitor is offering anything comparable.

The framework agencies actually use

Professional sponsorship valuation comes down to four multipliers: reach (how many people will plausibly see this), engagement (how many actually pay attention, not just pass by), exclusivity (is this the only business in their category with this placement), and brand fit (does the association make sense to the audience). The same jersey sponsorship might be worth very different amounts to two different businesses depending on how well the club's audience matches their customer base — a sports physiotherapy clinic gets more out of a jersey than a business with no plausible connection to the audience, even at identical reach.

Pricing physical assets

A useful anchor is what local advertising costs through conventional channels — a local newspaper ad, a radio spot, or a billboard in a comparable location. A jersey seen by 400 spectators at every home match, worn in photos shared well beyond the stadium, plus visible at away games, should be priced against those alternatives, not against what another club happens to be charging. An LED board seen for a few seconds per match is worth meaningfully less than a jersey worn for 90 minutes and photographed repeatedly — price the difference accordingly instead of using one flat rate for all "visibility" assets.

Pricing digital assets

Social reach and email lists are the easiest assets to undervalue because they feel intangible. A club with 3,000 engaged local followers and a 1,500-subscriber newsletter with a 35% open rate has real, comparable reach to a local email marketing campaign — which businesses already pay for. Translate the numbers into the same terms a marketing manager already budgets for: cost per thousand impressions, click-through equivalents, or simply "a dedicated post reaches more local households than most weekly print circulars in this area."

Building tiers instead of one flat price

Bundling assets into two or three tiers — for example a Community tier (social mention, program listing), a Partner tier (jersey space or boards, newsletter feature), and a Lead Partner tier (all of the above plus match-day activation and exclusivity in their category) — lets a business self-select based on budget while making the top tier's exclusivity genuinely valuable. Flat, single-package pricing forces every prospect into the same yes-or-no decision; tiers turn a decline at the top into a possible yes at the middle.

The two mistakes to avoid

Underpricing out of gratitude is the most common error — clubs that are simply relieved someone said yes often leave 30–50% of achievable value unclaimed. The second, less common mistake is pricing purely on reach while ignoring fit: a huge but irrelevant audience converts into a weaker renewal than a smaller, well-matched one, because the sponsor never sees a return worth repeating.
